Here is a first for me. I am currently running ubuntu 11.10 ‘Oneiric Ocelot’ using a Dell Inspirion 1501 System. The machine has a wifi card based on the broadcom 4313 chipset. Upon successful install of the system the additional driver manager comes up.
ignoring the whole freedom thing (in this case not having propriertary drivers loaded) i go ahead and load the broadcom sta drivers listed to update what is already working, perhaps there is some showstopper bug i think to myself. After finishing everything I reboot, and upon logging back in to the system i find out i have no more wifi. Completely disabled.
After some investigating online and trying many different “solutions” nothing helps. I go for broke and call up the additional driver manager again and remove the update. On reboot the wifi works again. If this was some wonky new beta driver from some joe out there in an attic of a small house i would say pffft stupid dev. But this update comes straight from canonical. So you would have thought it would just work.
Live and learn….
