The Update makes it worse

Here is a first for me. I am currently running ubuntu 11.10 ‘Oneiric Ocelot’ using a Dell Inspirion 1501 System. The machine has a wifi card based on the broadcom 4313 chipset. Upon successful install of the system the additional driver manager comes up.

ignoring the whole freedom thing (in this case not having propriertary drivers loaded) i go ahead and load the broadcom sta drivers listed to update what is already working, perhaps there is some showstopper bug i think to myself. After finishing everything I reboot, and upon logging back in to the system i find out i have no more wifi. Completely disabled.

After some investigating online and trying many different “solutions” nothing helps. I go for broke and call up the additional driver manager again and remove the update. On reboot the wifi works again. If this was some wonky new beta driver from some joe out there in an attic of a small house i would say pffft stupid dev. But this update comes straight from canonical. So you would have thought it would just work.

Live and learn….

The not enough marketshare excuse

This post was to long for a tweet, so here you go.

I won’t hide it i am a huge WP7 (Windows Phone 7) fan. Fell head over heels for the OS when I purchased the HTC Trophy from Verizon. I wont lie since then i have grown tired of the hardware but the OS still has me. Ok that’s out of my system.

Alot of the big name apps out there, Path, Waze, Instagram etc. Won’t play nice with Windows Phone because as many people say “not enough marketshare”. Well golly guys and gals how is wp7 supposed to gain a footing at all in this other OS world when to quote Robert Scoble “It’s all about the Apps”.. People will use a phone if there apps are there, the more apps that are there the more the marketshare will increase.. I don’t understand this excuse, everyone else waits for the other guy to make a showing first if they do well then maybe I will go… blah blah blah. So no one ends up going and then the others say “see, no marketshare, no one wants wp7..”

WELL DUH..no apps, no use.. it’s just frustrating to see this.. sorry microsoft, ya finally did good and everyone is to shocked to see it.

RIP Steve Jobs 1955-2011

The world has lost a true visionary. A true hero to many, a man beyond his time to the rest…

Rest easy Steve.
